The Indian Premier League (IPL) auction for the 2022 season is set to take place in February of next year. The franchises have been informed by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) that the mega-auction will take place in Bengaluru on February 12 and 13.
It’s also worth noting that on auction day, Team India will face off against the West Indies. On February 12, India and the West Indies will meet in a one-day international in Kolkata.
“It has been clarified to us that the match and the auction are two separate events that will both take place,” a franchise official told Cricbuzz.
Many big names have been released by the existing eight teams ahead of the auction, which could lead to a bidding war among franchises to secure their services during the mega-event.
However, the same could happen to some Indian domestic players, particularly those who have put in standout performances in the Syed Mushtaq Ali T20 Trophy in recent seasons.
After the two new franchises – Ahmedabad and Lucknow – select up to three players from the released list, the complete list of players for the auction is expected to be finalised by mid-January.
While the deadline for new teams to make their selections is December 25, it is almost certain that this date will be pushed back due to the holiday season.
