Kings XI Punjab is one of three franchises that have yet to win a trophy in the lucrative Indian Premier League since its start. The franchise only appeared in the IPL final once.
They reached the final of the IPL 2014 season but were defeated by the Kolkata Knight Riders. Despite having great players in their arsenal, they have not used their resources effectively.
Kings XI Punjab changed its name to Punjab Kings on February 17, 2021, ahead of the 14th edition of the Indian Premier League. Ness Wadia, co-owner of the Punjab Kings, also disclosed the reason behind the name change.
He added that the rationale for altering the name was to rethink some things and rebrand after 13 seasons of IPL. A change of name, however, did not result in a change of fortunes.
KL Rahul, who captained the Punjab Kings in both the IPL 2020 and 2021, led the team to sixth place in the points standings. They failed to qualify for the playoffs. KL Rahul was awarded the Orange Cap for the IPL 2022 season.
Punjab Kings struggled as a team in the competition and eventually bowed to pressure. KL Rahul decided to participate in the auction. This means that Mayank Agarwal will almost certainly take over as full-time captain.

The Punjab Kings, on the other hand, are yet to name a new skipper. Earlier, the BCCI requested that current franchises submit a list of players they intend to keep ahead of the auction.
Meanwhile, Punjab Kings retained only two players, one of whom is capped and the other who is uncapped. Arshdeep Singh (uncapped – INR 4 crore) and Mayank Agarwal (capped – INR 14 crore).
Punjab Kings shared a video clip to their official Twitter account. The brief video chronicles Mayank Agarwal’s four-year tenure with the franchise.
Mayank Agarwal became a member of the franchise in 2018. Since then, the Karnataka-born hitter has represented the team. He was retained by the franchise prior to the mega auction and will play for them in the upcoming season.
