Diana Baig bio: Trivia is shared on social media sites after AB de Villiers scores a century. It demonstrates how AB de Villiers is a natural athlete who, if not for cricket, might have succeeded in a variety of other sports. Diana Baig’s tale is similar. She plays really well football and is a natural athlete. To put it into perspective, she was good enough to make the Pakistani national women’s football team.
In the Hunza Valley, where Baig was raised, she often played football and cricket with her neighbors. She eventually excelled in both sports on a par. She would take several wickets one day and then score impressive goals the next. She never had any familial restrictions since she is a member of the Shia Ismaili faith.
The Gilgit-Baltistan women’s team required a new captain in 2010, while they were still extremely young. Baig was selected for the position due to her demonstrated leadership skills. She began playing often for Pakistan A women’s team two years later.
However, her football career wasn’t as planned out and decided. Despite being a skilled football player, Baig never considered making it her main profession. She made the decision to try out after learning from a friend that the Gilgit-Baltistan women’s football squad was running low on players. As a result of her success on the trails, she was chosen to represent Pakistan at the SAFF Championship in Bahrain four years later.
Childhood & Major Teams
On October 15, 1995, in Gilgit, Northern Areas, Baig was born. Since she was very young, she balanced playing football, playing cricket, and studying. Later, Baig enrolled at Lahore College for Women University, where she received the bulk of her training. Baig often attributes her development as a cricket player to the location. “It (her progress) is due of this college, this ground, since regular practice is really vital,” Dawn said in an interview.
She has also represented the Higher Education Commission Women, Islamabad Women, Federal Capital Women, PCB Dynamites, PCB Orioles, Saif Sports Saga Women, Islamabad Under-19s Women, Islamabad Under-21s Women, and PCB Challengers in addition to the Pakistani national team.
Residential Career
2011’s T20 Pentangular Women’s Tournament was where Baig played in his maiden professional T20 game. She didn’t strike out against the PCB Dolphins while representing the PCB Orioles. She was denied the opportunity to bowl. She bowled 5 overs and allowed 18 runs on her professional List A debut at the Mohtarma Fatima Jinnah Women Cricket Championship Seniors 2014. She also eliminated Sonia Shabbir.
Worldwide Career
Three years after being chosen for the Pakistan A squad, Baig was given the opportunity to play in an international cricket match. At Karachi, Baig bowled 4 overs for Bangladesh and gave up 18 runs. She was unable to open her score sheet or take a wicket.
A month later, against the West Indies at St. George’s, Baig made her T20I debut. She gave up 22 runs in 4 overs while also dismissing Stacy-Ann King. She participated in both the 2018 ICC Women’s World Twenty20 and the 2017 Women’s Cricket World Cup.
Facts and Quotes
In as many games, Baig has taken 23 ODI wickets and scored 53 runs. In 18 T20Is, she has taken 13 wickets and scored 25 runs. In a previous interview with Dawn, she explained how she balances studying for examinations with playing football and cricket at the same time.
“It becomes quite challenging. I attempt to begin with football. I play football in the morning, and then our cricket practice begins about noon and lasts until three or four o’clock. I begin studying at night and keep going till late,” she remarked.
