Shreyas Iyer was not retained by the Delhi Capitals (DC) ahead of the 2022 IPL mega auctions. Rishabh Pant was selected DC’s captain for the 2021 Indian Premier League (IPL), while Iyer was injured and missed the first half. Now that Iyer is a free agent, he is being pursued by a number of teams.
The Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) are one of the clubs interested in getting Iyer on board as a future captain, according to a storey in the Times of India. While clubs like the Delhi Capitals, Chennai Super Kings, Mumbai Indians, Royal Challengers Bangalore, and Sunrisers Hyderabad have options, KKR’s options are limited in the current retentions.
Iyer’s past experience as a coach in the IPL has aroused KKR’s interest in him for a leadership role. Under Iyer’s direction, DC advanced to the competition finals. With 519 runs scored at an average of 34.60, he was also the fourth-highest run-scorer in IPL 2020.
According to the report, Ahmedabad had chosen Hardik Pandya as captain, with Afghan spinner Rashid Khan and wicket-keeper opening batter Ishan Kishan as the second and third choices, respectively.
Meanwhile, the Lucknow-based second new franchise has practically decided KL Rahul as their skipper, with Marcus Stoinis and Kagiso Rabada as back-up choices. In addition, India’s ace leg spinners Yuzvendra Chahal and Rahul Chahar have piqued the interest of both teams.
If the COVID situation permits, the major auctions are expected to take place in Bengaluru on February 11-12.
