Manan Vohra is an Indian cricketer who plays as an opening batsman for Punjab in domestic cricket. Vohra is a right-handed batsman and right-arm medium bowler who was born in Chandigarh, India, on July 18, 1993. He began playing cricket in elementary school and went on to represent India at the Under-19 level.
Career
Domestic Career
Vohra comes from a sports background, as his grandfather was a former hockey player for India. However, he picked cricket over hockey as a profession. He amassed a considerable number of runs in age group cricket and was later assigned to the Punjab Under-16 team before being named captain of the Punjab Under-19 team. In the Vinoo Mankad Trophy, he led the team to victory. Vohra was selected to the Indian squad for the 2012 ICC Under-19 World Cup, but was forced to withdraw due to injury. During the 2013-14 Ranji Trophy season, Vohra smashed 187 with 24 fours and three sixes in a match against Jharkhand.
IPL Career
Vohra’s batting style made him an ideal limited-overs batsman, and in April 2013, he made his Indian Premier League debut for Kings XI Punjab, scoring an unbeaten 43 runs off 26 balls. In the season, he batted 20.12 and scored 161 runs. His most prolific season was in 2014, when he scored 3324 runs at 40.50 in eight matches, including 67 runs in the league final against Kolkata Knight Riders.
In the 2017 season, he single-handedly took his team close to victory when they were reduced to 84 for 6 in a match against Sunrisers Hyderabad. Played against SRH, he hit a career-high 95. Manan was purchased by Royal Challengers Bangalore for INR 1.1 crore at the 2018 IPL Player Auction, but the franchise later released him. He was signed by Rajasthan Royals for IPL 2019 at a salary of INR 20 lakh and was re-signed for IPL 2020. Vohra has scored 1012 runs at an average of 23.53 in 49 IPL matches, including three fifties.
Background
Yogesh Pratap Singh, a retired Indian hockey player who is now the General Secretary of the Chandigarh Cricket Association, is Vohra’s grandfather. He attributes his presence in cricket to his grandparents, who he finds to be his inspiration. His junior coach was India’s former racewalker Harminder Singh, but he is now being mentored by Yograj Singh, the father of Yuvraj Singh, a former Indian cricketer. After watching him play in his early years, Yuvraj Singh lauded him as an extraordinary talent. He is a prolific run scorer as well as an attacking batsman who can strike the opposition at any moment.
