Mayank Markande is an Indian cricketer who plays for the Punjab state team and the Mumbai Indians in the Indian Premier League. He was born in the Punjabi district of Bhatinda on November 11, 1997. Mayank has played for the India U19 team as well as the Punjab U16 and U19 teams. He bats right-handed and bowls right-arm leg spin.
Career
Domestic Career
With 59 wickets from 17 appearances for the state side, the prolific bowler idolises spinner Shane Warne. He was a member of the 2006 U19 World Cup team, but did not earn an international call-up. On 14 January 2018, Markande made his T20 debut against Jammu and Kashmir in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy. He took a wicket and bowled four overs at an economy rate of 5.25. Punjab lost by 23 runs, but Mayank drew the attention of the crowd. On 7 February 2018, he made his List-A debut against Haryana in a Vijay Hazare Trophy Group-A match.Mayank was very economical with his ten over spell, taking two wickets and allowing just 37 runs. Mayank and his squad had an unlucky debut, as Haryana won by two wickets with one ball to spare. Mayank has displayed beautiful skills with the ball and has taken 33 wickets from 31 innings in the T20s format, despite playing for Punjab with the likes of spinner Harbhajan Singh. He’s done well in the longer formats, with 64 wickets in 38 games in List A, including a hat-trick against Assam on February 13, 2018.
IPL Career
Mayank’s domestic success, especially in the limited overs format, was notable, and he was thus selected by Mumbai Indians in the 2018 IPL auction for Rs. 20 lacs in January, prior to his List-A debut. Mayank Markande made a dream debut for the Mumbai Indians in the Indian Premier League, taking 3-23 against the Chennai Super Kings. He was replaced by the franchise for the 2020 season following a mediocre 2019 season.
Mayank Markande became the first player in the Indian Premier League (IPL) to be traded twice during the transfer window. Before IPL 2020, he was traded from Mumbai Indians to Delhi Capitals and then to Rajasthan Royals. With back-to-back T20 World Cups in 2021 and 2022, Markande is hoping for a solid IPL 2020 season with the Rajasthan Royals, which will bring him back in contention for a spot in the Indian squad. The 22-year-old must be looking forward to learning from superstars such as Steve Smith and Ben Stokes, and hopes to make an impact.
International Career
Mayank completed an impressive fifer for India after wrapping up the England Lions. Early in 2019, he was rewarded for his ever-increasing stock with a first call up for the national T20I side against the touring Australians, a pick that even he said was unexpected. On February 24, 2019, he made his T20I debut for India against Australia. India lost the game, and Markande failed to pick up a single wicket in his four overs.
Background
He has had a passion for cricket since he was a teenager, and in 2006, when he was eight years old, he enrolled in a cricket academy. Mayank tried to be a pacer at first, but because of his body and lack of speed, his coaches recommended him to become a spinner. Cricketer Harbhajan Singh, according to India wicketkeeper Ajay Ratra, gave Mayank the chance to show off his skills.
