David Willey is an English cricketer who plays for the Yorkshire county team. He was born in Northampton on February 28, 1990. Willey is a left-arm fast medium bowler who can also bat well. Peter Willey, his father, is a former English cricketer as well as an international umpire.
Background
Willey had his first taste of county cricket when Northamptonshire signed him in 2009. He had the potential to swing the new ball and a strong touch with the bat. In his first match, he scored 60 runs against Leicestershire.
David’s real talents showed brilliantly in T20 cricket. In the 2009 T20 competition, he had a bowling average of 11.30. He helped his team win the 2012 Friends Life T20 Championship with some crucial contributions with the bat and 43 wickets with the ball.
Willey has signed a three-year deal with Yorkshire, which will begin in the 2016 season.
Debut
Willey made his ODI debut for England against Ireland on May 8, 2015. He took his first wicket in international cricket when he dismissed Andy Balbirnie. The match, however, was eventually called off due to rain.
In June 2014, he was assigned to England’s squad for the series against New Zealand. He took seven wickets in the final three games of the season. Willey was leaking runs and still taking wickets, aiding his side in winning the series 3-2.
On June 23, 2015, he made his T20I debut, finishing with figures of 3-22 to help his team to victory.
Rise to Glory
Willey’s best days in international cricket came during the 2016 World T20, which he played in India. He took two wickets and scored 57 runs for the eighth wicket with Moeen Ali to help Afghanistan chase down a 141-run target.
Low Points
Willey is a useful limited overs cricketer, but when the bowl is not swinging, he gives away runs. As a consequence of this problem, his form has been inconsistent over the years. His international success has also been affected by injuries.
Club Career
The Perth Scorchers signed Willey for the 2015-16 Big Bash League season in Australia. Through strong defensive performances, he was able to secure his place for the next two seasons.
