Shafiul Islam is a Bangladeshi cricketer who was born in the city of Bogra on October 6, 1989. He is a Bangladeshi fast-medium bowler who represents Rajshahi.
Background
In the 2006-07 season, he made his first-class debut for the Rajshahi Division, picking up a 5-wicket haul in his debut match and almost leading his team to victory with the bat.
In his first two seasons, he averaged in the mid-20s, which drew the attention of national scouts. Following that, he was selected for the tri-series against Sri Lanka and India.
He made his List A debut for Rajshahi Division, picking up one wicket against Sylhet Division. The match was won by Rajshahi by 79 runs.
Debut
Shafiul made his ODI debut for Bangladesh against Sri Lanka in a tri-series that also included India in January 2010. In the match, he took one wicket and gave up 39 runs in five overs.
He made his Test debut against India in Chittagong a week later. He went wicketless in the first innings and only took one wicket in the second.
In February 2010, Shafiul made his T20 debut for Bangladesh against New Zealand in Hamilton. New Zealand won the match without losing a wicket after Bangladesh were bowled out for 78 runs.
Rise to Glory
Following his domestic and ODI tri-series success, Shafiul was picked for the Test series against India.
His efforts were recognised when he was named to the 2011 Cricket World Cup squad. He was instrumental in Bangladesh’s shock victory over England. He and Mahmudullah put together a 58-run partnership for the 9th wicket, which helped Bangladesh win by two wickets.
Low Points
He gave up more runs and had a poor economy, and his inconsistency lost him a place on the national team.
Injuries were also a huge disappointment for him when it came to serving his country.
Club Career
Shafiul has been a part of the Rajshahi Division since the 2006-07 season. In the Bangladesh Premier League, he played for Khulna Royal Bengals in 2012. In 2016, he joined the BPL’s Khulna Titans.
Records
After conceding over 90 runs against England in 2010, he holds the record for the second most expensive bowling figures by a Bangladesh bowler in an ODI.
