David Hussey is an Australian cricketer who made his international debut when he was 30 years old. He batted right-handed and bowled right-arm off spin part-time.
Michael Hussey, a former Australian cricketer, is his brother. David was born in Morley, Western Australia, on July 15, 1977. In the Big Bash League, he captained the Melbourne Stars.
Background
He, like his brother, amassed a large number of runs at the domestic level before making his international debut. He competed in both the Australian domestic championship and the English county circuit on a regular basis.
In Australian domestic sport, David used to play for the Victoria Bushrangers. In the 2003-04 season, he scored 212 not out in the fourth innings while seeking a 455-run mark to defeat New South Wales. The knock cemented his reputation and impressed then-captain Steve Waugh.
He was unable to maintain his form in the longer game, but he continued to succeed in one-dayers and T-20s. In 2005-06, he was named Victoria’s one-day “Player of the Year.”
Debut
He was called to make his international debut in an off-season tour of the West Indies after amassing a large number of runs at the domestic stage.
On July 4, 2008, he made his ODI debut in Basseterre. He had a 52-point performance and formed a relationship with his older brother, Michael Hussey. He scored a fifty off just 19 deliveries in the fifth match of the series.
Rise to glory
In 2009, he scored his first and only ODI century against Scotland, scoring 111 off 87 balls. In the same year, he thrashed the South African bowlers, making 88 off just 44 deliveries in a T20I.
He was called into the squad for the Sri Lankan tour after being overlooked for the 2011 ICC Cricket World Cup team. In the home tri-series against Sri Lanka and India, he scored 439 runs.
Low points
Despite possessing a first-class record of about 53, he was unable to wear the white jersey for Australia even once. He also struggled in the One-Day Internationals for a long time, appearing in just 69 games.
Club Career
He was a regular in club cricket, playing in leagues such as the Indian Premier League and the Big Bash League.
He was purchased by the Kolkata Knight Riders in the first edition of the IPL in 2008 due to his ability in the shorter style of the tournament. He was one of the team’s few active batsmen, scoring 319 runs at an average of 29. In 2011, the Kings XI Punjab paid $1.4 million for him.
In 2011, he joined the Melbourne Stars of the Big Bash League, where he remained until 2017.
Retirement
On January 23, 2013, David Hussey played his last One-Day International against Sri Lanka. On January 24, 2017, he announced his retirement from all forms of cricket after his side, the Melbourne Stars, was eliminated from the BBL semi-final.
