Gujarat Titans won the 2022 Indian Premier League in style just a week ago; it was their first appearance in the prestigious event. Hardik Pandya led the squad admirably, contributing with both bat and ball to the team’s victory. Shubman Gill, Rashid Khan, Mohammad Shami, and Rahul Tewatia were among the major players who consistently delivered.
But one name jumps out above the rest: David Miller. The South African middle-order batsman won the most games for Titans (6 in total), and he was often on top of his game during a chase.
Miller, who batted largely at number five, finished the tournament as the tournament’s sixth best run scorer, with 481 runs scored in 16 games at an average of 68.71 and a strike rate of 143.
Temba Bavuma, the Proteas’ captain, is now hoping Miller can maintain his excellent form in the upcoming India-South Africa 5-match T20I series, which begins on June 9 at the Arun Jaitley Stadium in Delhi with the first match.
“It’s certainly pleasing, and having an in-form and confident David Miller gives us a lot of confidence. Even more so, his IPL performances… We’ll all benefit from the confidence and knowledge he brings in as a team “Bavuma remarked.
Miller bats as number six for South Africa, but Bavuma hinted that the southpaw might be promoted.
“David moving up the order and facing a lot more balls and having the ability to be a lot more damaging has always been discussed. He understands his place in our team and the job he performs within it… a role he has excelled at. But, if the opportunity to throw David a lot more balls comes up, I’m sure it will be taken into consideration.”
Quinton de Kock is another South African who shone in the IPL and will now showcase his talents in the T20I series. De Kock finished third among the IPL’s best run scorers, with 508 runs at an average of 36.28 and a strike rate of 148.97. De Kock’s runs included the best score of the competition, an unbroken 140 against the Kolkata Knight Riders.
Aiden Markram, another South African batter, also performed admirably. Markram, who batted at 139.05 and averaged 47.62 for Sunrisers Hyderabad, scored 381 runs at an average of 47.62.
Kagiso Rabada placed third in the list of best wicket-takers among the bowlers, as he does every IPL season. Rabada took 23 wickets at an average of 17.65 and an economy rate of 8.45 in just 13 games. His greatest performance was 4/33 against the Gujarat Titans, the eventual winners.
