The Mumbai Indians finished sixth in the IPL 2021 season.
The Mumbai Indians will be trying to put their poor 2021 campaign behind them as they prepare for the IPL 2022 season, which begins on March 26. MI came into the previous edition of the tournament with high expectations, having won back-to-back titles in the 2019 and 2020 editions, and could have become the first team in the competition’s history to win a hat-trick of titles if the Rohit Sharma-led side had done things right last year, when they finished fifth.
Meanwhile, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) released the schedule for the 15th edition of the prestigious competition on March 6, with last year’s finalists Chennai Super Kings and Kolkata Knight Riders kicking off the action on March 26 at Mumbai’s Wankhede Stadium.
The Pandya brothers have left the Mumbai Indians.
Meanwhile, the five-time champions will kick off their season on March 27 at the CCI Stadium in Brabourne against the Delhi Capitals. The middle-order will be the toughest test for Mumbai Indians this time around, and it remains to be seen where Kieron Pollard will get his much-needed help after the club opted to split ways with the Pandya twins Hardik and Krunal.
On November 30, 2021, the five-time winners have nominated captain Rohit Sharma, Kieron Pollard, Suryakumar Yadav, and speed spearhead Jasprit Bumrah as required retentions. They subsequently went on to sign Tim David (INR 8.25 crore), Dewald Brevis (INR 3 crore), Jaydev Unadkat (INR 1.30 crore), Murugan Ashwin (INR 1.6 crore), Basil Thampi (INR 30 lakh) and others in the IPL 2022 big auction last month. The five-time champions broke the money to bring back teenage wicketkeeper-batter Ishan Kishan for a stunning INR 15.25 crore, outbidding all other clubs.
While MI did purchase England pacer Jofra Archer for INR 8 crore during the Bengaluru two-day tournament, it should be remembered that the tearaway fast bowler will only be available for the 2023 season due to an elbow ailment. The Mumbai Indians will be trying to go the distance and capture a record sixth IPL title this time around with a revamped roster.
