Profile

One of the best all-rounders to have represented Afghanistan is the cunning off-spinner Mohammad Nabi. Since he participated in both the inaugural ODI and Test game for Afghanistan, he has been a part of practically all of the team’s victories. Nabi also served as the team’s captain when they triumphed in their inaugural match against a Test-playing nation. In the 2014 Asia Cup, Bangladesh was the opponent. Despite the fact that it was Afghanistan’s lone triumph during the competition, Nabi’s leadership was commendable.

Nabi, who was born in the Afghan region of Logar, struggled from an early age because his family had to relocate to Pakistan because of a conflict between the Soviet Union and Afghanistan. He moved back to Afghanistan and resumed his cricket training there. Nabi was a member of the Afghanistan team that competed against MCC in India in 2006. He played brilliantly, scoring an impressive 116 points. He participated in the MCC’s young cricketer programme, and in 2007 he played his first first-class match against Sri Lanka A. In that game, he scored the most runs for the squad.

In 2009, Mohammad played his first ODI against Scotland. He had a strong game with the bat, scoring a superb fifty, but he failed to pick up any wickets with the ball. Nabi then made his T20I debut shortly after. Nabi didn’t have much success with the bat, but he was efficient with the ball and took one wicket. Nabi was named the team’s captain in 2013 and served as the captain for both the 2014 Asia Cup and the 2015 World Cup. Nabi resigned as captain in 2015 following a dismal World Cup. Despite a decrease in his batting performance, Nabi got a century against Zimbabwe and was voted Man of the Series. As Afghanistan advanced to the Super 10 round of the 2016 T20 World Cup, Nabi was crucial. Mohammad was also a member of the Test team that played India in the team’s inaugural Test match. In the dismal 2019 World Cup, he led Afghanistan in wickets taken. After the one Test against Bangladesh in 2019, Nabi declared his retirement from competition.

Over the years, the all-around player has participated in numerous leagues. In the Bangladesh Premier League, he has played for Sylhet Royals, Rangpur Riders, Chittagong Vikings, and Comilla Victorians. Mohammad played for the Quetta Gladiators in the Pakistan Super League. Nabi was the first Afghan player to be chosen for the Indian T20 League in 2017. He was signed by Hyderabad, who have benefited greatly from his bat and ball skills. In a 2019 encounter against Bangalore, Nabi took 4 wickets while dismantling Bangalore’s top order. He currently owns the T20I record for the quickest fifty-point score by an Afghan player. Nabi became the first bowler from Afghanistan to record 100 ODI wickets. The seasoned player is still a vital member of the national squad and is considered one of Afghan cricket’s all-time greats.
