Fatima Sana Biography : The story of young Pakistani pacer Fatima Sana is not the same as many of her national teammates. The problem that many female Pakistani cricketers have faced while growing up was – the restriction that came from family.

While some had a very strict father who didn’t want his ward to get into cricket, many have dealt with strict brothers. Some have even played on the grounds of anonymity.

Nida Dar, for instance, kept her hair short and dressed like boys. Many even thought that she is a boy. All of this was mostly because of a strict brother. These tales are fairly prevalent, and many female cricketers have gone through this. But Fatima Sana’s story is a bit different. She had no restrictions from her family whatsoever.

Stats & Figures

Sana has been poor in the two ODIs she has played so far. She has picked up only 1 wicket and has leaked runs at an economy rate of almost 10 runs per over. But in the four T20Is she has played in, she has excelled.

She has picked up 3 wickets and have conceded runs at a rate of just above 7 runs per over. One of her three-wicket hauls was international.

In fact, two of her family members always supported her in her journey, and helped her reach the level she is in now. Those two family members are the same that play the role of ‘hurdles’ in other stories – father and brother. These two are have worked as pillars in Sana’s career. She nurtured a dream since the day the started bowling – to be the fastest bowler of Pakistan, and then, the world.

Sana’s father and brother have helped her in every capacity, and so has the Pakistan Cricket Board. Given the squad they have selected for the ICC Women’s World T20, it is very clear that they have enormous faith in youth.

Early Life & Major Teams

Sana was born on November 8, 2001 at Karachi, Sind. She made her international debut at the tender age of 17. Sana has competed for the Hyderabad Under-19 Women’s team, a local team. She has also played for Pakistan Cricket Board XI Women and PCB Challengers.

Domestic Career

Sana’s domestic T20 career kicked off with the PCB National Under-19 Women’s Championship 2013/14. Playing for Hyderabad Under-19s Women, she bowled 4 overs and conceded just 18 runs in Multan’s Under-19s women. She didn’t take any wicket though.

She has recently also played in the National Triangular T20 Women’s Championship 2019-20. Playing for PCB Challengers, she was impressive in the very first game.

Ayesha Naseem and Aliya Riaz, two of her national team teammates, were dismissed by her. In the next two matches, she picked up as many wickets and maintained a superb economy rate.

International Career

Sana made her debut in international cricket in the series against South Africa while still a few months away from reaching adulthood. Her debut came in an ODI in Potchefstroom. She bowled 3 overs and surrendered 23 runs, and also picked up the wicket of Lizelle Lee.

On her T20I debut, she gave only 18 runs in 3 overs, but didn’t have any wicket to speak about. Sana, however, was impressive in the series, and took the wickets of world-famous cricketers like Mignon du Preez and Nadine de Klerk.

Even the PCB was pleased with how children in the rainbow nation performed. Speaking to Dawn, the head of women’s wing Urooj Mumtaz Khan said “The South Africa series saw two youngsters, Rameen Shamim and Fatima Sana, make debuts.”
