Leg-spinner Ghulam Fatima, who rejoined the Pakistan women’s ODI squad after a five-year break, is still active in the team. The Sialkot native led Pakistan to a stunning eight-wicket victory against Sri Lanka in the first game of the three-match ICC Women’s Championship series on Wednesday at the Southend Club, Karachi, by playing her greatest innings of the season.

The 26-year-old was reintegrated into the national team for the ICC Women’s Cricket World Cup 2022, which was held this year in New Zealand; her last appearance for Pakistan was in 2017 in Colombo versus Sri Lanka.

Fatima was called back due to her exceptional performance in the Pakistan Cup Women’s One-Day 2021–22 match that took place in Karachi. Fatima grabbed 10 wickets for PCB Dynamites in seven games at a cost of 22.10 and a low economy rate of 3.39.

Fatima played in two matches at the World Cup, collecting three wickets for 52 runs in nine overs against South Africa and returning without a wicket against Bangladesh.

Wednesday saw Fatima provide excellent leg-spin while wowing everyone with her control, flight, and variations that confused the Sri Lankan batsmen.

As Sri Lanka fell from 96 for three to 96 for six in the 31st over of their innings, Fatima concluded her 10 overs allowing only 21 runs while dismissing four batsmen, including two in back-to-back deliveries.

Fatima disclosed to the journalists at the post-game news conference that she had admired the recently deceased Australian legend Shane Warne. Fatima decided to make the most of her second chance to wear the green Pakistani uniform.

“It is a special day for me, and I’m thrilled to have helped Pakistan win and to get the player of the match award,” said Ghulam Fatima. I had to wait for a very long period to recover my position on the national team, which has made me tenacious and determined to succeed.

“Today’s spell was extremely fun for me, and I was really happy with the four wickets I got. My favorite wicket was the one that was bowled, Oshadi Ranasinghe. I’m committed to giving Pakistan a long-term contribution, and to that end, I’ll keep working hard to develop all facets of my bowling.

It is disappointing that I would not be able to meet Shane Warne today since he was always my favorite leg-spin bowler.

In the meanwhile, Fatima has given Pakistan another excellent leg-spin option after Tuba Hassan had a very strong debut in the T20Is that followed the ODI series.

With five wickets throughout the three games, Tuba, who won player of the match on her debut, eventually won player of the series.

The leg-spin bowling duo of Fatima and Tuba can offer Pakistan with distinction in both white-ball forms, giving their leaders excellent balance and match-winning bowling options.
