Rohit Sharma made a great comeback from injury as the Indian skipper took an impressive 67-ball 83 lead from up front in the first ODI against Sri Lanka in Guwahati on Tuesday. His knock was a batting average of 123.88, and he had three sixes and he had nine hits at the fence.
Rohit narrowly missed an opportunity to match Ricky Ponting’s record 30 his ODI century when Madhusanka ended his stay at the wicket of the Indian opener. The Indian skipper now has 29 ODI centuries out of 235 ODIs and is nearing the 10,000 mark.
Rohit and Shubman Gill built up his stand for an excellent 143-run opening to give India a solid start in the opening of the ODI. Gill also impressed at bat, breaking 60-ball 70 and both Indian openers poised to reach centuries, but missed the opportunity to register the triple-figure mark.
The last time Rohit celebrated his 100th anniversary was against Australia in 2020, opening his game winner in the pursuit where he smashed his 119th of 128 deliveries and India finished his Helped beat Australia by seven wickets. In his next series home against England, Rohit didn’t score much as he got his 2022 off to a good start to half a century against the West Indies.
His 76 unbeaten streak against England at The Oval was his highest score of 2022, and the Indian skipper capped 2022 with his 51 unbeaten streak against Bangladesh at Mirpur.
Rohit injured his left thumb in his second ODI with Bangladesh and returned to Mumbai for treatment. After missing India’s victorious T20 series against Sri Lanka, Rohit was back as captain and was on course to start the new year in style with a spectacular half-century, earning the 30th ODI tonne. .
But the Indian captain will have to wait until he equals Ponting’s record with 30 goals.
