India captain Rohit Sharma withdraws his appeal on a run out against Shanaka in his first ODI in Guwahati, even though the Sri Lankan skipper was out of the crease in his non-strikers end This has defused a potentially controversial situation.
The incident occurred in the final over of the game when Mohamed Shammi ran into the ball but broke the stumps on the non-striker’s side before delivering it. At that point Sri Lanka needed 83 of his 3 pitches and Shanaka hit his 98.
“I had no idea Shami would do that,” Rohit told Star Sports after the game. “When he appealed…he beat Shanaka again with 98. The way he hit was great. we have to give it to him. You can’t take him out like that. We wanted to get him out the way we thought we would get him out. But we hadn’t thought of that. But again, hats off, he played really well. ”
Shanaka would have been out had Rohit not withdrawn his Shami appeal, but the Sri Lankan captain was allowed to continue the inning and finished with 108 of 88 balls. India eventually won the game by 67 runs after Virat Kohlis scored 113 of his 87 balls.
After winning 2-1 in the T20I series, India is leading 1-0 in his ODI series in his three games. The team travels to Kolkata for his second ODI on 12th January at Eden Gardens.
