The second ODI between South Africa and England, which the Proteas won by five wickets, saw a tense moment between Jos Buttler and Rassie van der Dussen. The two ended up in a verbal altercation that took place during the South African pursuit after England put a solid 342/7 on the board.
The exchange between the two was captured on Stump Mic and took place on the 19th. Van der Dussen failed to hit Adil Rashid’s googly, took the inside edge of his racket, hit the pad and threw it into the air. After that, tensions increased. Standing near the stumps, Buttler reacted quickly when he tried to grab the catch, but was blocked by van der Dussen, who was standing in front of him. “Trying to steal the ball,” Butler said. “What’s your problem, Lassie? It’s not always about you.”
Van der Dussen replied:
“No, it’s about you.”
“Try to catch the ball,” added Buttler. “what should i do?”
At this point the referees intervened and one of them shouted:
“Okay, calm down!”
Van der Dussen hit 22 of 14 deliveries at that point and was eventually dismissed by Adil Rashid on 38 balls for the same number of balls and caught by Moen Ali.
Meanwhile, South African skipper Temba Bavuma took the lead up front, hitting 109 of 102 pitches to lead South Africa to the series win. Building on Bavuma’s performance, South Africa hit a huge target of 343 runs in five balls to take a 2-0 lead in the three-game series.
Aside from Bavuma, Aiden Markram chipped in with 43 balls and 49 medium-order shots, while David Miller played an undefeated 37-ball 58 knock.
