The former captain of the Nepal cricket team, leg-spinner Sandeep Lamichhane, who was once celebrated for his on-field achievements, has faced a significant setback after being found guilty of rape by the Kathmandu District Court on Friday (December 29). This legal verdict comes after a period of legal proceedings and hearings.
Judge Shishir Raj Dhakal, presiding over a single-judge bench, delivered the ruling, declaring Lamichhane guilty based on the examination of the case, presented facts, and available evidence. Notably, the court acknowledged that the victim was not a minor at the time the alleged crime occurred.
It is worth mentioning that charges were initially brought against Lamichhane in September 2022. Despite the legal proceedings, the leg-spinner continued to represent Nepal in international cricket, remaining on bail pending the trial. The situation took a turn when a lower court order, which had initially mandated his detention, was overturned by the country’s Supreme Court in January 2023.
The verdict has not only marked a significant personal downfall for Sandeep Lamichhane but has also cast a shadow over the realm of cricket, where the former IPL star had once garnered attention for his cricketing prowess.
