Mixed Reactions Follow Mitchell Starc’s Disappointing Debut for Kolkata Knight Riders in IPL 2024 Opener
Kolkata Knight Riders clinched a thrilling victory against Sunrisers Hyderabad in their IPL 2024 opening game, but it was a night to forget for their star acquisition, Mitchell Starc. The Australian fast bowler, who fetched a record-breaking price of INR 24.75 crore in last year’s auction, endured a tough outing, conceding 53 runs in his four overs.
Starc started relatively well, giving away 22 runs in his initial two overs. However, Heinrich Klaasen’s explosive innings turned the tide in SRH’s favor, especially during Starc’s penultimate over. Klaasen’s onslaught, featuring three consecutive sixes, added 26 runs to SRH’s total, bringing them close to the daunting target of 208 set by KKR.

Despite the pressure, KKR’s Harshit Rana delivered a remarkable performance, dismissing Shahbaz Ahmed and eventually Klaasen within three deliveries, securing a narrow four-run victory for his team.
While KKR fans expressed disappointment over Starc’s below-par performance, there was heightened criticism, particularly considering his hefty price tag. Nonetheless, some supporters remained optimistic, believing that Starc would bounce back as the season progresses.
Returning to the IPL after a nine-year hiatus, Starc previously represented Royal Challengers Bangalore, where he showcased his prowess by claiming 20 wickets in 13 matches during his last season with the franchise.
