Sunil Gavaskar Raises Concerns Over Kolkata Knight Riders’ (KKR) Rs 24.75 Crore Investment in Mitchell Starc during the IPL 2024 Auction. The former Indian captain expressed skepticism about any player being “worth such an exorbitant amount.”
“It’s excessive, to be honest. I don’t believe any player justifies such a hefty sum. If Starc can make a significant impact and win around four out of the 14 matches he plays, then you might consider it worth the investment. If he also contributes in other games, then that’s absolutely commendable,” Gavaskar remarked on Star Sports.
Gavaskar emphasized that Starc must deliver match-winning performances in at least four matches for KKR in IPL 2024 to justify the expense.
“He needs to deliver match-winning spells in at least four out of the 14 matches, particularly in crucial games against Mumbai Indians, Chennai Super Kings, and RCB, considering their strong batting lineups. If he can bowl out these teams, then perhaps we can say the investment is justified,” Gavaskar added.
Starc will make his IPL comeback after a nine-year hiatus, having last played in 2015. In his previous 27 matches, he has taken 34 wickets at an average of 20.38 with an economy rate of 7.17.
The Australian showcased remarkable form in the 2023 ODI World Cup before the player auction, securing 16 wickets in 10 matches as Australia clinched the trophy by defeating India in the final at Ahmedabad.
