Career
Domestic Career
At the age of 20, Neesham made his first-class debut for Auckland in 2010. However, in 2011, he made the decision to relocate to Otago, which proved to be a wise decision. In eight list A matches, he scored 205 runs at 51.25, including two fifties, and took 14 wickets at an average of 23. He finished the season as Otago’s third-highest run scorer and wicket-taker. Against Wellington, he had his best stats of the season, with 5-44.
Neesham was excellent for the Otago Volts in the 2013 Champions League, helping them in a number of wins in the early stages of the season.
IPL
The Delhi Daredevils (now Delhi Capitals) acquired James Neesham for the seventh edition of the Indian Premier League. However, due to a lack of chances, he only appeared in four games and was eventually cut from the squad the next season.
After a six-year absence from the IPL, James Neesham was signed by the Kings XI Punjab (KXIP) for Rs 50 lakhs for the 13th season of the tournament, which will begin on September 19 in the United Arab Emirates (UAE).
International Career
James Neesham made his One-Day International debut in January 2013 and did not make an impact. However, after his debut series, Neesham showed flashes of brilliance, but his inconsistent play held him in and out of the squad on a regular basis. As a result, he barely missed the bus for the 2015 World Cup in his home country and was devastated. For the next two seasons, Neesham was a member of the one-day squad, but he was dropped after the 2017 Champions Trophy.
Neesham scored 34 runs in one over against Sri Lanka in the first One-Day International on 3 January 2019, including five sixes. He was selected to New Zealand’s squad for the 2019 Cricket World Cup in April 2019.
He was excellent with both bat and ball during the match, and in the final against England, he took three wickets and created the game-tying final-ball run out to level the scores after 50 overs. In the Super Over, he was given the bat and scored 13 off 5 balls, including a big six off Jofra Archer. As Martin Guptill was run out running back for a second run that would have won New Zealand the World Cup, he was at the non-end striker’s for the final ball.
Following some outstanding results in the shorter formats during the domestic season, Neesham made his T20I debut for New Zealand against South Africa in Durban in December 2012. His debut match did not go well for New Zealand, who were bowled out for 86 runs with Neesham contributing 10 runs.
Neesham struck a century on his Test debut against India in February 2014, and he was at the other end when skipper Brendon McCullum became the first Black Cap to score a Test triple century. On his debut, he hit a 137-run inning, which is the highest score by a number 8 batsman in a Test match. He has played 12 Tests so far, scoring 709 runs at a strike rate of 33.76.
