Former India captain Sunil Gavaskar mocked the BCCI’s return to the yo-yo test, saying the selection committee needed medical professionals, not former Indian cricketers.

In his Mid Day column, Gavaskar explained that if spinners and pacers and wicket keepers require different levels of fitness, yo-yo his test fails as a parameter. “What I am trying to say is that fitness is personal and there is no one-size-fits-all. An even higher level is needed, and the batter probably needs it more than anything else, so it’s hard to see the parameters set for everyone and not for their own field,” he wrote.
“Fitness in cricket is a major consideration. And of course it would be beneficial if these fitness tests were made public and conducted in the presence of the media, so that players could say ‘yo-yo’ or no or no. “Because you know,” he added. BCCI also uses DEXA (Dual-Energy X-ray Absorptiometry), which checks various aspects such as bone density and body fat percentage, as a parameter of choice.
“The CAC only interviewed candidates for the selection committee, but there were no biomechanics experts or physical science experts. It may be better to have experts on the selection committee,” writes Gavasker.
