After drawing first blood, the duo of Shami and Mohammaed Siraj mounted Kiwi batters and made them dance to their tunes. In the sixth over Siraj took a wicket from Henry Nichols and Shami added more heat in the next over dismissing Darryl Mitchell. New Zealand staggered by 6.1 overs and he was 9/3.

Under immense pressure, the visitors lost another wicket in the next over, with Thakur driving off captain Tom Latham and in 10.3 overs he reduced to 15/5. None of New Zealand’s top five batsmen reached his double figures. Conway was the top five scorer on 7 of 16 pitches.
