Wasim Jaffer Bio

Wasim Jaffer is an Indian cricketer who was born in Mumbai, Maharashtra, on February 16, 1978. He bats right-handed and bowls right-arm off break intermittently. Jaffer is the highest scorer in India’s domestic cricket competition, the Ranji Trophy, and has similar characteristics and style to legendary Mohammad Azharuddin.

Debut

Wasim Jaffer made his Test debut against South Africa in February 2000. Jaffer had a strong record in domestic cricket, so the bar was set high for him. However, against best-in-class bowlers like Shaun Pollock and Allan Donald, things did not go as expected.

In November 2006, Jaffer made his One-Day International debut, but he was once again unproductive with the bat.

Rise to Glory

Jaffer was recalled after two years after a bad result against South Africa in 2000. He played well against the West Indies, scoring 51 and 86 respectively in Bridgetown and Antigua.

Jaffer made his first test century against England in March 2006. Wasim blasted a double century after a few months, cementing his place as the opening batsman alongside Virendra Sehwag for the upcoming tests.

In the second test against Pakistan in 2007, Jaffer smashed 202 in the first innings at Eden Garden in Kolkata.

In June of 2015, Jaffer relocated from Mumbai to Vidarbha. He won the 2017-18 Ranji Trophy after a fruitful season.

Club Career

Jaffer has played for Scholes CC in England’s Huddersfield Drakes League for many seasons. Jaffer broke the league record for most runs scored in a season when playing for Skelmanthorpe Cricket Club in 2010. Jaffer joined Himley CC in 2011.

In the LDCC season, Jaffer played for Ainsdale CC in 2013. Jaffer had a strike rate of 97.93 and a best score of 153 not out when scoring several centuries. Jaffer was forced to retire after half a season due to a knee injury and returned to India.

Retirement

Jaffer’s last test match was against South Africa in April 2008. He has not been chosen in the squad since then due to his poor results, scoring just 15 runs in the first innings and 10 off 11 balls in the second.

Jaffer’s chances of making the senior team are dwindling as he gets older. However, he manages to dominate the Ranji grounds with his bat.
