Sourav Ganguly assisted the Indian star overlooked by team management in the 1st ODI with Sri Lanka.
Sourav Ganguly, the former chairman of India’s Cricket Control Board (BCCI), said on Tuesday that Indian starter Shubman Gill was the wicket-keeper at his first-day One-Day International (ODI) against Sri Lanka on Tuesday. After being favored over batsmen, he favored Ishan Kishan. Kishan, who failed to maintain his place in the Rohit-led team in ODI XI, was scoring his second century in history in India’s previous series against hosts Bangladesh. Ahead of his first ODI between India and Sri Lanka, skipper Rohit had hinted that opener Gill and Shreyas Iyer would score a long run in his 50-over format. Rohit ensured that Kishan would remain in the hosts’ mix, but the Indian opener was made to warm up the bench in the first ODI against Sri Lanka.
With India having his ODI calendar full in World Cup year, former Indian skipper Ganguly believes that Kishan will get a chance to play for Rohit-led team. “I’m sure he (Kishan) has a chance. His time will come,” Ganguly told PTI News Agency.
When the former cricketer openly criticized his Kishan’s non-selection in his ODI in Sri Lanka, Ganguly made an active starting XI. “I don’t know… I can’t say. There are too many opinions in India. It’s up to (head coach) Rahul Dravid and (skipper) Rohit Sharma to decide who actually plays the game and who is the best. You have to decide whether or not,” added Ganguly. India, led by Rohit, will face Sri Lanka in the second ODI at Eden Gardens on Thursday.
