Mohammad Rizwan, who has not played for the Pakistan Playing XI, took over the captaincy from Babar Azam, who was ill on day three of the first friendly against New Zealand.
Sarfaraz Ahmed has been called up for the first test in Karachi, becoming the first white player to represent Pakistan since January 2019. He replaced Rizwan, who had not hit 50 in the last 12 innings.
According to ICC law, a substitute fielder cannot be the official captain of the field, and Pakistan did not name a vice-captain for this match.
Later in the day there were lbw complaints against opener Devon Conway before Naumann Ali bowled. Initially not issued, Pakistan decided to go upstairs. Interestingly, it was Sarfaraz who signaled the referee to judge without talking to Rizwan.
