Cricket match reviews : Rohit Sharma’s Absence Looms Over IPL 2024 Unless Traded from Mumbai Indians

In a surprising twist, Rohit Sharma, the captain of the Indian cricket team, may sit out the upcoming 2024 season of the Indian Premier League (IPL) unless he is traded out of the Mumbai Indians. This development unfolded following the decision by the five-time IPL champions to appoint Hardik Pandya as the captain, acquired through an all-cash deal from the Gujarat Titans.

Speculation surrounding Pandya’s return to the Mumbai Indians intensified, with indications that his participation hinged on assuming the captaincy role. The Indian Express disclosed that Rohit Sharma was made aware of this decision before the recently concluded ICC ODI World Cup 2023 in India. The MI management, following consultations, agreed to Pandya’s condition, informing Sharma during the World Cup.

Rohit Sharma then left the decision about the team’s future to the franchise. Post the World Cup and IPL retentions for the 2024 season, Mumbai completed the trade for Hardik Pandya. To facilitate this transaction, the five-time champions also traded Australian all-rounder Cameron Green to the Royal Challengers Bangalore in a similar all-cash deal.

On December 15, following these trades, the Mumbai Indians officially announced Hardik Pandya as their captain for the 2024 season. Since then, reports have surfaced indicating that Rohit Sharma may not be available for the 2024 season unless he is traded out of the Mumbai Indians.
