Rishabh Pant is poised to make a return as the captain for Delhi Capitals in IPL 2024, following his absence in the 2023 season due to serious injuries sustained in a car crash in December 2022. The franchise is optimistic about Pant’s full recovery by the end of February, expecting him to be fit for the upcoming season.
While it remains uncertain whether Pant will resume his role as a wicketkeeper-batter or play as a specialist batter, the franchise is reportedly pleased to have him back as both the captain and a key batsman. The initial indication of Pant’s potential IPL return emerged in November when he participated in a Capitals camp in Kolkata, attended by senior franchise staff, including Sourav Ganguly, Ricky Ponting, and Pravin Amre.
Pant, who underwent successful reconstructive surgeries on all three key ligaments in his right knee, has been undergoing rehabilitation at the BCCI’s National Cricket Academy in Bengaluru. Although there’s no official confirmation on whether he has resumed wicketkeeping, videos posted by Pant suggest positive progress in his recovery.
The BCCI’s last official update in July stated that Pant had made “significant progress in his rehabilitation” and had started batting and keeping in the nets. If Pant receives clearance from the National Cricket Academy in February, as anticipated by the franchise, the IPL 2024 will mark his return to competitive cricket since the Bangladesh tour in late 2022.
During Pant’s absence in the previous season, Delhi Capitals appointed David Warner as the interim captain, and the team finished second from bottom with five wins and nine defeats in 14 league games.
