IPL Expert Predictions : IPL to Permit Two Bouncers per Over in Rule Amendment

In a significant change, IPL 2024 will permit bowlers to deliver two bouncers per over, aiming to create a more balanced contest between bat and ball. This alteration in playing conditions was experimented with during the 2023-24 Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy, India’s domestic T20 tournament.

Saurashtra veteran Jaydev Unadkat, who has played for various IPL teams and has set his base price at INR 50 lakh (USD 60,000 approx.) for the IPL 2024 auction, expressed his support for the rule change. Unadkat emphasized the advantage it provides to bowlers, offering an additional weapon in their arsenal. The alteration allows bowlers to keep the batsmen on their toes, especially those vulnerable to bouncers.

Unadkat highlighted the impact on strategies, particularly in death overs, where bowlers can now employ a mix of yorkers, slower balls, and bouncers. He welcomed the rule as a small change with significant implications, giving bowlers more options and making the game more dynamic.

Additionally, the Impact Player rule introduced in IPL 2023 will continue in the upcoming season. Teams will list four substitutes at the toss, and one of them can be utilized as the Impact Player, providing tactical flexibility. The rule also specifies restrictions on bringing in overseas players based on the composition of the playing XI.

The trading window for IPL 2024 will reopen on December 20, a day after the mini-auction, remaining accessible for up to a month before the season begins. The final schedule for IPL 2024 is expected to be announced once the polling dates for India’s general elections are finalized by the Election Commission, with the tournament likely to run between March 22 and the end of May.
