Already grappling with the devastating defeat in the initial Test in Centurion, India faces a significant setback as Shardul Thakur, the sole pace-bowling all-rounder in the team, sustains a shoulder injury while batting in the nets in Centurion. Following the blow, he displayed considerable discomfort and refrained from bowling thereafter.
According to PTI, the ball that struck him on the shoulder kicked up from a length, leaving Thakur in an awkward position, impacting his leading left shoulder. Although there is no confirmation that Thakur requires a scan, an optimistic sign for India is that he continued batting later.
Thakur had a challenging Test in Centurion, conceding 101 runs for just one wicket. His down-the-leg-side bowling was unexpected for India’s fourth pacer, although it resulted in the dismissal of Dean Elgar. In response to Thakur’s injury, India has called up Avesh Khan, currently with the India A squad in South Africa, to join the senior squad in Cape Town as a backup for Mohammed Shami.
The upcoming second Test of the series between India and South Africa is scheduled at Newlands in Cape Town, commencing on January 3.
