Opener David Warner, who played a pivotal role in Australia’s World Cup win with a spectacular century, attributed his success in One Day Internationals (ODIs) to the Indian Premier League (IPL), where he honed the skill of pacing his innings. Warner’s blazing 163 off 124 balls, along with his 259-run partnership with Mitchell Marsh, secured a 62-run victory over Pakistan, elevating Australia to the fourth position in the tournament standings.
Warner acknowledged the learning experience provided by the IPL, where he improved his ability to pace an ODI innings. During the post-match media conference, he stated, “I’ve established early on in my career that 50 overs is a long time. I look to try and get to 35 overs and then from there, try and put my foot down if I’m still in. I think that’s where in T20 cricket, I’ve learned a little bit as well to change my gears, especially in IPL. I learned a lot when I was playing for Sunrisers that you’re able to have a lot more time than you think.”
Warner’s performance at the Chinnaswamy Stadium exemplifies this strategy. He reached his first 50 in 41 balls, the next fifty came in 44 balls, and the final 63 runs were scored in just 39 balls.
Warner emphasized the importance of setting a platform in the first ten overs of an ODI match, respecting the new ball, and then, if conditions allow, accelerating in the latter stages. He also noted that his experience in Test cricket helped him adapt to different situations.
Warner has been particularly successful against the Pakistan team, scoring four consecutive ODI hundreds and even achieving a triple hundred in 2019 against them.
He downplayed any notion of a “magic potion” against Pakistan and attributed his success to a strong mindset and backing oneself in every match.
Warner also praised his opening partner, Mitchell Marsh, who scored a century in the same match, and Marcus Stoinis for their contributions to the team’s success.
He believed that 350 was a par score on the Chinnaswamy Stadium pitch, considering the ground’s history and the potential for dew making batting easier. Warner acknowledged the possibility of partnerships forming during a chase, emphasizing the need to stay focused and maintain a positive approach.
