Mumbai Indians secured the services of South African fast bowler Gerald Coetzee during the IPL auction in Dubai on Tuesday, marking his inaugural season in the tournament.
Having played a significant role in South Africa’s journey to the ODI World Cup semifinals in India, Coetzee claimed 20 wickets, with 15 of them coming in the middle overs. This accomplishment positioned him as the fifth-highest wicket-taker in the competition. Coetzee, who already represents the Chennai Super Kings in SA20 and Major League Cricket, is recognized for his ability to deliver brisk pace, adding substantial value to his team.
The 23-year-old paceman showcased his talent in the recent second T20 against India, where he finished with figures of 3/32, contributing to his team’s victory.
Beyond his bowling prowess, Coetzee demonstrated his batting skills in List A cricket. In a notable performance against Sri Lanka A in Pallekele, he emerged as the top scorer for South Africa A. Coming in at 42 for 7, he played a pivotal role by scoring 77 off 89 balls. This commendable display occurred against a formidable bowling attack featuring Dilshan Madushanka, Dunith Wellalage, and Lakshan Sandakan.
